Working Remotely

Here is a selection of suggestions on how to successfully work remotely and how to ensure that your efforts are productive and not overly stressful.

Get Comfortable

Make sure you have the right equipment at home so you can be efficient and productive. This includes things like a computer and high-speed internet connection that can support video conferencing, a desk, an ergonomic chair, office supplies and a desk lamp.

Designate a Workspace

It is easier to stay mentally focused if you have a specific area in your home to get work done. If you can find a spot that provides a lot of natural light, even better. Ensure that you have an appropriate backdrop if you plan to make video calls.

Set Boundaries

It's critical to set boundaries when working from home. Have start times and finish times. Organise signals as to when you should be left alone. For example, something tied outside a door may mean that you are on a call, or at a meeting, and should not be disturbed.

Maintain a Routine

Set a work schedule for yourself and stick to it. Try to wake up at the same time every day and treat weekdays just as you did before. For most people, the morning is the time to get serious work done. So, try to complete any difficult tasks as early in the day as you can.

Stay in Contact

Regular and ongoing communication is more critical when you work remotely. Communicate frequently with your boss and know what's expected of you. Effective remote workers reach out to peers and managers regularly through a variety of tools.Online tools like Slack help workflow while also serving as social conduits. However, it’s even better to engage directly with people. Make telephone calls and arrange Zoom meetings.

Take Breaks

Working remotely is inherently challenging because it's easy to lose track of time. As a result, taking breaks is even more critical when you are working from home. Get away from your PC, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Walk the dog.

Do Other Things

Try to get outside for some fresh air when you can. Other activities that are enjoyable and don’t require personal interaction include taking virtual classes. Don’t let your world get too small.

Look After Your Wellbeing

Try to have some fun and watch out for others. Try to use saved commuting time for the benefit of fun, family and friends. After all, aren’t these the things that really matter?
