Law Society input at Oireachtas committee

Law Society representatives Robert Purcell and Aine Breathnach will be in the Dáil this week before the Joint Committee on Justice and Equality.

At 9am on Wednesday 13 November, the committee will hear detailed scrutiny of the Criminal Justice (Victims of Crime) (Amendment) Bill 2018, with the objective of affording legal aid to those who are victims of sexual offences, gender-related crime and violence in a close relationship.

Sexual offences

The Law Society has previously contributed to this discussion in the context of the Professor Tom O’Malley review of prosecution and investigation of sexual offences.

Fianna Fáil justice spokesman Jim O'Callaghan and representatives from the  Rape Crisis Network Ireland will also be in attendance.

The Finance (Tax Appeals and Prospectus Regulation) Bill 2019 moves to the final stages tomorrow while the Social Welfare (No. 2) Bill goes to second stage.

On Wednesday, under Private Members Business (Sinn Féin): Consumer Insurance Contracts Bill 2017 will move to final stages. The bill has been brought forward by Pearse Doherty TD.

'Dual pricing'

Also, on Tuesday, the Law Society will be closely monitoring the Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform and its analysis of the practice of “dual pricing” for insurance.

Representatives from Central Bank will come before the committee to speak on the topic.
