Objectives of the Association

The Solicitors’ Benevolent Association is a voluntary charitable body consisting of all members of the profession in Ireland. It assists members or former members of the solicitors’ profession in Ireland and their wives, husbands, widows, widowers, families and immediate dependants who are in need. The Association was established in 1863 and is active in giving assistance on a confidential basis throughout the 32 counties. In the past, the Association traditionally helped elderly widows living on inadequate fixed incomes. We still have a number of such cases, but over recent years the circumstances of new applicants have altered dramatically. Frequently, applicants now tend to be from younger age groups and there are often several dependent children involved.

The Directors are from all over the 32 counties. The Association relies on the support of our members in all areas not only to provide financial support but also, very importantly, to keep us in touch with people in need in all areas to enable us to carry out the task of considering cases and providing benefits and advice to those in need.

To cover the ever-greater demands on the Association, additional subscribers are more than welcome, as, of course, are legacies and the proceeds of any fund-raising event, large or small. Subscriptions and donations will be received by any Director or by the Secretary, who can also deal with any queries arising.

The objects of the Association are to provide relief, aid and advice to members of the Association, to current or former members of the solicitors’ profession in Ireland, and to their dependants including spouses, partners and children, whose life circumstances may have brought them into poverty or any material need. The Directors may, at their discretion, include other related persons as dependents.
