Cork solicitors gather for professional update and networking event
Over 200 solicitors from across County Cork are gathering at the Kingsley Hotel today (Friday 18 November) for a networking and training event.
The Practitioner Update Cork 2016, organised by Law Society Skillnet in association with Southern Law Association, is focussed on the specific needs of the region’s solicitors and the communities they serve. Topics including company law, employment law, the Assisted Decision-making (Capacity) Act 2015 and data protection will be discussed.
President of the Southern Law Association Don Murphy, whose firm Murphy & Condon Solicitors is located on Shandon Street in Cork city, says that a solicitor’s advice can be vital in many different situations in life. “There are many different instances in family and business life where your solicitor can provide invaluable advice and assistance - from making a will or buying a new home, or more difficult matters such as marriage breakdown and employment issues.”
“For example, employment law, particularly the new Workplace Relations Act, is a very important topic here in Cork as the economy grows and employers seek to expand or set up new businesses. While the new Act has improved the employment law regime, the system remains complex, time-consuming and confusing for both employers and employees.”
“Also, if you’re thinking of buying or selling a home, it is very important to be aware that the process has become much more complex in recent years. While Cork solicitors are seeing an increase in conveyancing, a good indicator for the local economy, the recession has left a lasting impact in the form of new charges and legacy issues. Your solicitor will be invaluable in helping to navigate these issues to a successful house purchase or sale.”
Law Society Director of Representation and Member Services Teri Kelly explains that the seminar is one of a series of regional cluster events taking place throughout the country this year. “The Law Society Skillnet team has worked with local solicitors to ensure that the seminar delivers the professional updates that are most relevant to their clients in Cork.”
