A shift in focus for Regulation – better supporting the profession
03/03/2025 16:36:02For many practising solicitors, the increasing demands of regulatory compliance can often feel like a thorn in the side, an obstruction to what matters most: providing clients with expert legal services.
Your feedback
When the Law Society engaged in a profession-wide survey in 2023, the pressures felt by solicitors to comply with their regulatory requirements were made clear. 81% of respondents saw regulatory compliance as either ‘challenging’ or ‘extremely challenging’, with smaller firms more likely to see increased regulatory obligations as ‘extremely challenging’. By extension, the survey also revealed that 68% of respondents viewed regulatory compliance as a high priority, while an equally significant number of solicitors made clear that the Law Society could improve its offering around regulatory communication.
New developments
In response to this feedback, the Law Society has taken deliberate and proactive steps towards refining the delivery of its regulatory functions, and the supports it provides. A new regulatory communications function has been created, with the purpose of increasing practical support and guidance to solicitors with all aspects of regulatory compliance.
In addition, and in an effort to lead best practice with the implementation of Anti-Money Laundering (AML), a dedicated AML unit has been established, which will focus on improving the supports provided to solicitors to help meet their statutory AML obligations.
Another initiative has been the launch of the Regulation Answers helpline and hub, Regulation Answers is a free solicitor support, providing a range of guidance and information resources on all areas of regulatory compliance.
