News

Nominations are now open for Law Society Council 2025/26 until 5pm on 9 September. While in-house solicitors from the public and private sector make up over 25% of the profession, they are vastly under-represented on Council. As a Law Society member, you can nominate up to two colleagues, or run yourself, to ensure a greater say in prioritising in-house concerns.

The Law Society Council is responsible for ‘the sole and entire management of the Society’ and, as a member, you get to elect that Council. But have you considered running? The Gazette talks to two in the know.

At a recent panel discussion hosted by the Law Society’s In-House and Public Sector Committee, legal experts spotlighted the public sector as a hub for rewarding, diverse careers – and a compelling alternative to private practice.

Resources

There is still time to RSVP to the Law Society’s Well Within the Law festival. Taking place in Blackhall Place from 5pm on Wednesday, 3 September, this event will explore the theme of absurdity in the current moment. Guest speakers include Mr Justice David Barniville, solicitor and author Rosemary Hennigan, Irish authors Kevin Barry and Claire Keegan. This is a great opportunity to network with colleagues from across the profession and to explore wellbeing initiatives you can incorporate in the in-house environment.

Did you know you can access a free helpline and information hub for regulation queries? Regulation Answers was set up to assist all practising solicitors to be compliant through free support, newsletters and detailed guidance on different areas of regulation.

Training

On 8 October, the Annual In-house and Public Sector Conference will take place in Blackhall Place from 9.30am to 1.15pm. The conference will explore the role of the in-house lawyer in a dynamic global landscape under the theme of ‘Adapting and Thriving in Transformative Times’. Expert speakers from both the private and public sectors will cover topics from the practical aspects of using AI for the In-house lawyer, to the Ireland for Law initiative and how to manage an evolving work, regulatory and business environment. 3.5 hours of CPD are available for attending.

The newly launched Law Society micro-credentials are short, online courses designed to equip participants with legal expertise and practical skills and an opportunity to upskill in new areas. Communication Skills for Legal Leaders is a course aimed at in-house solicitors leading or managing teams designed to enhance the participants’ ability to communicate confidently and effectively in their everyday interactions with their teams and colleague.
16.5 CPD hours professional development and solicitor wellbeing are available upon completion.
