News
The latest Gazette includes coverage of the most recent annual in-house conference, which heard that there are ‘extraordinary’ opportunities in a thriving sector.
Applications have opened for the 2025 Practising Certificate (PC) Renewal. Applications including payment must be received by the Law Society by 1 February 2025.
The Law Society Technology Committee’s note ‘Navigating the EU AI Act: ensuring AI literacy in legal practices’ outlines key steps to help meet the AI Act’s literacy obligation from February 2025. Under Article 4 of the Act, organisations including legal practices must ensure that all staff (and other persons dealing with the operation and use of the AI systems on their behalf) have a sufficient understanding of any AI systems, tailored to their specific roles and the context in which these systems are deployed.
There is uncertainty among copyright holders as to how they can create a legally effective reservation of rights within the rapidly evolving age of artificial intelligence (AI). Mark Hyland’s article for the December Gazette ‘Clash of the titans’ focuses on the copyright provisions in the landmark law.
Resources
The Law Society has launched Regulation Answers, a new helpline and hub to support solicitors requiring information and guidance with general regulatory compliance queries. Solicitors can also access guidance and supports for specific practice-related issues.
Training
Applications are open for the spring 2025 Diploma in In-House Practice. This course is designed to provide in-house lawyers or aspiring in-house lawyers with a comprehensive understanding of the varied, challenging, and stimulating work that confronts those working in business and in the public sector.
