Dwelling completions up 44.5% to 5,669 units in Q1
Quarter 1 2022 had the highest level of new dwelling completions of any first quarter since the series began in 2011, according to CSO data.
There were 5,669 new dwelling completions in Q1, up 44.5% from Q1 2021 and 15.1% higher than pre-pandemic Q1 2020 completions.
There were 1,742 apartment completions in Q1 2022, a rise of 148.5% from Q1 2021, representing almost a third (30.7%) of all new dwelling completions.
There were increases in both scheme (25.0%) and single dwellings (14.5%) from Q1 2021.
Q1 2022 saw the highest proportion of completions in urban areas (83.0%) in a quarter since the series began.
Double
Completions in Dublin were more than double (120.8%) that from the first quarter of 2021.
Statistician Justin Anderson said: “The amount and proportion of new builds comprising of apartments has continued to increase. Scheme dwellings were up 25.0% to 2,821 from the first quarter of 2021 while single dwellings rose 14.5% to 1,106. Of all completions in Q1 2022, 49.8% were scheme, 30.7% were apartments and 19.5% were single dwellings.”
Increase
Seven of the eight regions of Ireland saw an increase in completions from Q1 2021, with a 120.8% rise in Dublin and 77.6% in the South-East.
More than four-fifths of all apartment completions were in Dublin (85.5%) and apartments now account for more than two-thirds of all new dwelling completions in Dublin (69.6%).
The Mid-East region accounted for 30.2% of total scheme dwellings this quarter while the South-West region had the highest number of single dwelling completions, with 16.8% of all nationally.
At a Local Electoral Area (LEA) level, North Inner City in Dublin had the most completions.
The eight LEAs with the most completions were all in Dublin while Laytown-Bettystown in Meath was the highest outside the capital.
