Bar’s new tax group to hold first conference

Chief Justice Mr Justice Donal O’Donnell (pictured) is among the speakers at the first annual conference of the Bar of Ireland’s Tax Bar Association (TBA).

The event takes place on Saturday, 8 October, in the Distillery Building, Dublin 7.

The TBA was set up in May this year as the first formal representative body for Junior and Senior Counsel who practise or possess expertise in the taxation field.

The conference on ‘Tax litigation, important issues and recent developments’ will hear from a range of experts in the tax and legal sectors.

Issues from recent cases

The list of speakers includes:

  • Mr Justice Donal O’Donnell (Chief Justice of Ireland),
  • Ms Justice Siobhan Stack (High Court),
  • Marie-Claire Maney (chair, Tax Appeals Commission),
  • Michael Ashe KC, SC,
  • Grainne Clohessy SC,
  • Ciaran Ramsay SC (chair, Tax Bar Association).

The judges’ contributions will form the basis of a discussion and analysis of issues arising from recent High Court cases, while Marie-Claire Maney will make a presentation on the transformation of the Tax Appeals Commission.

Michael Ashe KC will lead a discussion on evidential issues – in particular, practical issues arising in appeals before Tax Appeals Commission.

Grainne Clohessy SC will consider the topic of jurisdiction in tax litigation.

TBA chair Ciaran Ramsey will also outline the new association’s ambitions, and how it will help practitioners in ongoing professional development in this niche area of law.
