Clothes and shoe prices up by 7.3% in year

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose by 2.7% between January 2025 and January 2026, down from an annual increase of 2.8% in the 12 months to December 2025.

Excluding energy and unprocessed food, the CPI grew by 2.8% in the 12 months to January 2026, CSO data shows.

The divisions with the largest increases in the 12 months to January 2026 were education services (+8.9%) and clothing and footwear (+7.3%).

Decline

The only divisions to record a decline when compared with January 2025 were furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance (-0.6%) and transport (-0.1%).

Consumer prices fell by 0.9% in the month between December 2025 and January 2026.

The divisions to record the largest rises in the month were alcoholic beverages and tobacco (+2.7%) and health (+0.3%).
