Tim Scanlon essay contest opens for entry

Matheson has launched the 2026 Tim Scanlon Corporate Law Bursary, which honours late Matheson partner and former chair Tim Scanlon.

 Established in 2022, the bursary is open to undergraduate and postgraduate law students.

The winner will receive:

  • Bursary of €5,000,
  • Matheson corporate department internship, and
  • In recognition of Tim’s passion for the arts, a piece of Irish art or craft in lieu of a trophy.

Commenting, managing partner Darren Maher said: “Tim Scanlon was my personal mentor and friend, and his guidance shaped both my career and my understanding of what it means to lead with integrity.

Deeply personal

“This bursary is deeply personal to me because it allows us to extend Tim's generous spirit of mentorship to the next generation.”

Applicants must submit an essay of 1,200 words (excluding footnotes of reasonable length and citations) discussing one of the following topics:

  • ‘Increased sustainability reporting has transformed corporate disclosure obligations.’ Discuss,
  • Does the EU regulatory framework in its current form strike the right balance for Irish companies?

Eligibility: Applicants must be based in a university, college of education, or equivalent third level institution on the island of Ireland.

Submit applications no later than Friday 27 March.
