Agreement with abuse survivors after mediation

The Government says that it has agreed a package of additional supports for survivors of institutional abuse after a mediation process.

As part of the agreement, Taoiseach Micheál Martin has agreed to make a formal apology in the Dáil on behalf of the Government.

In November, a group of survivors agreed to end their protest outside Leinster House after meeting the Taoiseach and the then Minister for Education and Youth.

A Government statement said that a mediator was then appointed, and the Taoiseach made a number of commitments to address their concerns.

Commitments ‘build on’ 2025 act

“These will build upon supports already provided for under the Supports for Survivors of Residential Institutional Abuse Act 2025 and will include supports for health, education, housing, and funeral costs,” the statement added.

The Taoiseach is to consult the Attorney General on the apology, which the Government said would:

  • Build on the 1999 apology to victims of institutional abuse,
  • Take into consideration parts of the 2021 apology to survivors of mother and baby homes, and,
  • Address issues relating to criminal records.

The date for the apology will be scheduled “as soon as possible”, according to the statement.
